"Black Mermaid, because I know the opposite"... Halle Bailey shuts herself off from social media
Hollywood actress Halle Bailey (23) expressed her position on the casting controversy for the movie 'The Little Mermaid'.
America's 'Entertainment Weekly' exclusively obtained an undisclosed still cut from 'The Little Mermaid' on the 5th (Korean time). Interviews with the cast and crew were also included.
'The Little Mermaid' is a live-action adaptation of a Disney animated film released in 1989. It was loved by children for its ending differentiated from the original.
However, the casting caused controversy. When a black actor was dropped for the role of Ariel, criticism came out that the original work was destroyed. Some criticized Disney for excessive PCism (political correctness).
Halle Bailey is also aware of the negative atmosphere towards this movie. However, for his personal mental health, he stays away from social media and malicious comments.
"I know there are many different opinions (about casting)," he said. "I just need to block that noise (malicious comments). I chose not to read the comments and delete Twitter."
He added, "I am accepting this moment as it is. It is a great and beautiful blessing and opportunity for me (to play the lead role in 'The Little Mermaid')."
Halle Bailey also mentioned a fan she met recently and said, "(The interaction with the fans) moves me and keeps me focused. (Appearing in 'The Little Mermaid') The advantages outweigh the disadvantages."
Meanwhile, in addition to Halle Bailey, 'The Little Mermaid' also stars Jonah Hauer King, Javier Bardem, and Melissa McCarthy. It is scheduled to open next month.
